Try using your fast idle lever when your starting cold and it has been sitting. It advances the timing to help it start easier.

This sound like what my 200 was doing before the VRO gave up the ghost. Prime and crank like crazy until she fired. The rest of the day would it would start in a heartbeat. Turned out the VRO was pumping more and more oil as it gave out.

You shoulda seen the smoke the day it finally packed it in...figure I was running aout 5:1...you could barely see the boat

Re: starting my 1988 225hp

Go out there and flip up the little red lever on the primer celenoid. Someone recently posted a picture of it. Pump up the bulb and you will hear the fuel spraying into the crank case. Flip the lever back down and crank up the motor. I can almost assure you it will fire right up. My 1987 200 HP Johnson was doing the same thing and this fixed it. Your primer celenoid is probably bad. After I crank mine up the first time it starts right up the rest of the day. I have not replaced my celenoid yet and I might not. Good luck.

Push the key in and listen for the click of the solenoid. No clicky, no workee.
Mine went a couple of years ago.
Now, I always listen for the click before starting.

Re: starting my 1988 225hp

Mine clicks but apparently does not inject enough fuel to start it in an acceptable time frame. This time of year I start my motor every 2-3 weeks whether I use it or not and without switching it into manual, I could not get it to start without taking the plugs out and spraying premix directly into the cylinders or putting the primer into the manual mode. In the manual position, you can hear it spraying into the crankcase. It will then crank the first time the flywheel turns around. I almost got rid of my motor b/c I could not get it to start cold. I learned to check the primer anyway on this forum.

Re: starting my 1988 225hp

when motor is lowered, the exhaust is lower in the water and creates more back-pressure resulting in lower rpm's. Also, when the motor is tilted up and running, it tends to build up fuel in the intake so when you lower it you get a rich condition that lowers rpm and can often stall out a motor. This is a response to your initial question.

Re: starting my 1988 225hp

final UPDATE : bill from mechanic $500 rebuilt all 6 carbs, new floats and needles valves, they were varnished up from bad/old gas, i guess it sat around awhile before i bought it...

also replaced all theromastats to make sure it was running at correct temp. no to go boating.
