Ok so the boat that I just acquired had a "new" according to the old owner mercruiser 228 which is a chevy 305 that just needed to be finished putting together after pulling the Valve covers and intake I decided to pull the heads and see if the cylinders were rusted. Once I got them off I came to decide this was more of a back yard style rebuild with many shortcuts. Well needless to say the cylinders are vary pitted and the coolant passages horribly corroded. However it is new cam, lifters, and pistons.

My question is why is it so hard to find just Blocks. everyone is selling short or long blocks but I have a good crank cam rods ETC. If someone has a source for chevy blocks it would be greatly appreciated

I plan on going up to the 350 re using connecting rods Crank Cam Etc should just need new piston set

Re: starting new.

You can try eBay, or an engine builder may have one In good shape. It might be hard to come by, there really isnt any money it just selling the block without the innards.

But since your wanting to go to a 350 a short block may be a better option, less work to build anyway.

Edit.....gess it's not that hard after all:D prices don't seem to bad, but for another 500 you can get the short block.

Well it looks like that site is geared at racing so you may have better luck finding them cheaper. You can try a junk yard, probably get a hole engine cheaper, then just rip it down to just the block, there is always risk in buying a junk yard motor tho.

Re: starting new.

That's probably the best bet, can score one especially if it's not running and questionable, and you plan on rebuilding it anyways.

Bone Picking! :D

Of coarse, it's gonna take more time if you have to get a complete junker engine, tear it down, drop it off, WAIT for the machine work, and bolt er back in.
