I have a 1979 80 Merc that have had to the dealer twice for starting prob.It will start great when it's cold but if you run it very long and shut it down and try to restart it and you have to choke it and grind on it for a few minutes till it runs.I have had the dealer rebuild the carbs and do all the mantaince on this motor. They are tryin to tell me its the reed valves thats the cause and they are tellin my that its drainin 1-2 carbs when its shut down and is starvin for gas. I just bought the motor used and seen it start and run and start 5-8 times before I bought it and it popped right off every time. Then after I got it back from the dealer its doin this.My question is that it has to be in the carbs isnt it? Out of all the things the dealer done I had to rework it. I havent messed with carbs on a outboard but I need some input before I do.

Re: Starting Prob

Well after a weekend on the river my boat started almost every time. Now I think I am on the right track that might be wrong with it.Saturday when I was out i noticed the volts were almost 15 volts most of the day.Sunday when I went out it wasnt charging at all and I lost my tack signal most of the time.I am leaning toward the stator now. Any input would be great!

Stator or rectifier and possible wrong type battery. Go to CDI's website and download testing info for your engine to test ignition/charging system..

Well I found a brokin wire from the rectifier and repaired that.It worked great for half a day now its back to chargin 16 volts.I have a seloc Manual and it says the rectifier is in front by the carbs.I looked and I think its on the right side of the motor by the switch box that is where the wire was bad.Can any one tell me where its at for sure?
