Hi,

I am having an intermittent starting problem and have yet to isolate the source.

When attempting to start I will get nothing except a very small (.1 to .5V drop) indication on the voltmeter. Engine does not turn over, starter does not click. This happens once in a while.. usually it turns right over and starts without fuss. After a few minutes of tinkering with wires (looking for problems) and cycling the shifter it will sometimes come back... But now its been a few days of repeated failed attempts.

Electrical seems OK, showing over 12.5V, all electronics and tilt works. Checked starter for continuity and its ok. Tried another fully charged battery, same problem.

Is there an cutoff switch malfunction or shifter adjustment out of whack here that could be causing this? Or is it the starter? Thanks for any advice..

DC

Hi, HiFi.

Time for some troubleshooting.

If you are getting 12V to the solenoid small terminal the starter switch and neutral switch are okay.

Run jumper cables to starter hot terminal and block (ignition off). Starter turns? It's okay.

Now put jumpers to solenoid input big terminal and block. Hit starter. Starter turns? Solenoid is okay.

What is left? Hi current cables and their connections. It is amazing how good a corroded connection can look.

Good luck. :)

Exact same thing happens with mine. Usually when restarting after anchoring. No clicks at all. Always have to slightly push and pull the blue shifter control on the engine and then it starts.

Thanks, JB, I'll try your tips to confirm it's not some other cause.

Re: Starting problem, OMC 4.3

Thanks for the advice JB!

My started was in bad exterior shape quite a bit of corrosion, so I ordered a new one just for insurance (this will be a Catalina boat - hope to avoid needing a tow!). I have yet to run those tests you suggested but will do it tomorrow with the current starter. I did take apart the remote control box and removed the safety switch wiring, so I can bypass and test. Also removed the current starter so I could clean it and the terminals easier. I am convinced the starter is OK and that the problem is with the switch, key, ground or other wiring connect/corrosion problems. I also just installed a dual battery system with perko 2-battery switch before this problem got worse so this might also have something to do with it (installation double checked, wiring is OK, and of course all other electronics and volt indications are good).

Anyways, I'll let you know what I find out.. thanks again!

DC

The problem turned out to be the safety switch in the remote control box. Bypassed it and it worked great. New switch on order.. Thanks for the help!

-Damian
