Re: Starting problem

With a test light clipped to a good ground, touch the tip of the test light to the I terminal of the ignition switch (purple wire) with the key in the run position. Test light should light. If not replace the ignition switch.

If it does light, check the safety lanyard switch, could be also be wiring on the engine. What is the model number of your engine? 305 from 79 isn't much help.

Re: Starting problem

Thanks. It's actually a 350 GM (my mistake on original post) AQ 200 series. I did the light test. Key on, light ok, turned key to start...engine cranked, light went out. Then a new thing happened. The engine stopped cranking ( New battery wearing down, only after about 5 seconds). Burning smell from back of engine. Like a burner wire smell?
