I think the old gas is the key,did you drain your carbs before you stored it?
if not sounds like you need to run throught the carbs and clean them.
It takes very little crap in a carb to make you motor run bad/not at all.
Also put up model # so the pros know what they are dealing with but I would start with the carbs.
As far as adding new gas to old I do that every year,it only sits for 4 months so it isn't "bad" and I make sure I put in more new gas than there was old and we are only talking 2-3 gallons of old to start with.
Plus I always drain my carbs after the last trip, that is the key.

do you have a fuel/ water separating filter, before the fuel pump? did you winterize it? do you use seafoam additive in your fuel. old gas is always bad idea. as said probably crud in the carb.

Fogging the carb does absolutely nothing to protect the fuel system during layup since it doesn't get inside the carb -- it mearly passes through the bore. Fogging protects the cylinders and valves. Before layup you need to add fuel stabilizer like SeaFoam or Stabil to the fuel and then run the engine until the treated fuel has been drawn into the fuel system. Then fog the engine, and do the remainder of the winterizing (like draining the block, etc.). It is also a good idea to run fuel conditioners like SeaFoam on a regular basis. It keeps the fuel system clean.

Do you have points in your distributor? If so, check for condensation inside the cap and point gap also. They should be changed each year anyway.
