I have a 1988 25hp Mariner. I have problems with my motor starting. It will start fine when I first take it out but after a few starts on the lake it will stop. The appendix will spin and I can hear clicking but the arm will not kick up. I have replaced the battery, I have replaced the cables from the battery to the motor, and I have had the starter rebuilt and tested under stress conditions buy 2 reputable companies. I cannot find my problem. Do you think It could be the solenoid giving me fits ? There is only two things in the chain I have not fixed and that is the solenoid and the switch the key goes in.

Re: Starting Problems

Hi, MHigh.

Your problem is probably in cable connections for the high current starter circuit. #1 suspect: where the ground cable from the battery ground connects to the engine block.

Check out the troubleshooting of battery circuit in "Outboard wont start" in FAQ.

Good luck. :)
