Re: STARTING PROBLEMS - CHEAP FIX & LESSON

Re: STARTING PROBLEMS - CHEAP FIX & LESSON

After a successful and enjoyable day spent fishing the Dunedin Causeway flats, I took my boat to a wash down station, hooked up the ears to flush the engine and the engine wouldn't start. No click, no electrical impulse at all. I switched batteries via the PERCO and still no electrical impulse detected. Pretty frustrating after my 2003 Merc 50HP ran so well all day.

Turns out my problem was the speedometer!!! The air pressure hose came unhooked at the bottom of the speedometer and dropped down in the battery compartment in my CC boat. It must have happened when I hit a wake and bumped pretty hard on the way out is my guess.

Anyway, the water sucked up this tube went into the battery compartment and shorted out both batteries. When I opened the compartment I noted water and the batteries were both wet. Removed and dried the batteries and wiped down the battery pans, rehooked the battery cables and wha-laa, I was back in business.

So check the speedometer cable and secure it with a twister at the speedometer & secure the hose with duct tape or cable hangers.
