starting problems

Today when out i stopped my boat. Tried to start it again and it kept making that noise as if your car was running and you tried to start it again, that screech noise.

So i took the cover off and turned the flywheel a bit then tried again and it started. I also watched it try to start with the cover off and it seems that when it just made the screech that the starter could not get any grip with the flywheel teeth.

So where do i need to change the flywheelk or the starter teeth? where do i find these parts?

Ok, so i have figured out i need a new bendix?

The funny thing is, even though the bendix will work when i turn the flywheel around a bit by hand, the bendix's teeth look very grinded down. I guess my flywheel is starting to grind down in some spots then as well?? seeing how it will work in some spots.

Anyway, So i need a new bendix for a 157 hp V6 johnson 2 stroke 1988.

Can soemone point me in the right direction please to purchase one or maybe you have one for sale?

I need one ASAP, real fast so if you have one for sale and except paypal, then lets sort it out njow. I dont care if it is a bit used, as long as it can go on and do the job.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Thanks, but how do i know what model it is?

Also, i dont see anything called bendix, or starte motor. Any help here?

look under electric starter they are the same for all those motors.

cheers mate. IS it easy task to just buy the teeth and change them myself with run of the mill tools?

Why would my teeth of gotten so worn. Surely my mechanice would have noticed this a day or two ago when they were changing the rectifier? makes me wonder if it has hapenned in a fast way? They look to be very polishd teeth.

i would check the cables etc first, if it is not getting full power it will not engage the flywheel. it is normal for the gears to wear some. this motor has very little use on it, but you can see some wear.

it gets lifted up and it spins it but just the teeth are not long enough in all places to get the shorter teeth on the flywheel.
