I was wondering if I try to start my 59 super seahorse 35hp with the pull starter instead of the electric starter do I still need to have have the key to the on position. And if so what if my battery was already dead I don't have a alternator.

Key on. (acts like a kill switch). Magneto ignition, so can run without the battery -- doesn't matter if the bat. is dead, except auto choke won't work if totally deceased. Choke manually.

edit. Saw your earlier post(s). Had some starting and/or running issues -- might be better to charge the battery (or replace) and fire it with the starter. Better to crank it fast for ignition unless fully tuned and in running shape.
