Starting/running with out Jet impeller

I'm getting close to be able to fire my 1995 90/65 Jet Evinrude after a rebuild. Can I fill a tank of water to run it in but remove the Jet Drive impeller to test the engine. The lakes/rivers here in Mt are a little frosty and hard. Just want to make sure it'll fire before driving a fur piece to find some open water for a test. Other wise I'll have to engineer something to keep the water in the tank. Those jets tend to be a little messy.

With out the jet how are you going to get water to the power head ??

This may sound ignorant but I believe there is an impeller for the water pump and an impeller for the Jet Drive. If I remove the impeller for the jet the water pump still should cool the powerhead correct?

Yup, if I remove item #36 the impeller, I should still be able to run the unit and cool it while doing the initial startup. Just trying to keep my mess to a minimum. That big impeller throws a lot of water around even in a tank.

Yes you can run it without the aluminum jet impeller, as there is indeed a normal water pump kit at the mid section, however you still need the jet housing to be bolted on to the mid section as that is where the water intake is.

Thanks for the diagram GA, I've never worked on a jet outboard. Good to know.

All of the newer OB jets are now made with a 3/8" threaded hole (plugged by a stainless steel screw on the LH side) remove this & utilize the standard flush adapter, which puts water into the cooling wate rpump. You leave the whole jet drive in operational functioning. The manual also recommends that after you run the motor & before you store it, that you also grease the bearing with their special pump/grease.

So that's what the flushing kit is used for. Item 82 and remove screw #42. I was thinking it was like the flush port on a prop motor, but the jet housing doesn't have water intakes on the side like a prop motor.

Guess I should have read my manual before asking dumb questions. Thanks for the info.
