Starting the Engine

I have a Johnson 25 HP 2 cycle, 3 cylinder. It has an electric starter and whenever I use the boat, I have to attempt to start it at least 3 times, sometimes up to 5 times. It runs fine when warm. I changed my plugs and it still takes a few turns to start. Question, shouldn't an engine start the first time? Maybe I'm being too demanding.

Re: Starting the Engine

Most times with a cold 2 stroke, you have to bump the choke a few times to keep it running until it warms up a bit. What is your starting procedure? And what year is your motor?

Re: Starting the Engine

People are so used to fuel injected everything these days they have no comprehension of how carburetors and chokes work. Starting procedure requires that you first squeeze the primer bulb until firm. Raise the fast idle lever. Turn the key to ON (not START) and then press and hold the key in for count of 6 or 8. Then turn the key to start. When the engine starts, pull the fast idle lever down a little and be ready to push the key in momentarily if the engine begins to die. When the engine is idling smoothly, pull the fast idle lever all the way down. If this engine has an electric choke rather than a primer, forget the count of 6 or 8. Hold the key in while cranking.
