i have a 1985 johnson 20.j20crcos i had recently bought new coils,wires ,plugs and powerpak.i was having problems with dying after it got hot.so i replaced powerpak.put it in bay and ran it for 2 minutes,felt like it was gonna die.got home,started it and it immediatly dies.i have cleaned the carbs,fuel pump is working.need help as to what it could be.cdi said it isnt powerpak could be stator???

hey good to see u.been tryin to message u.they said u hv to many messages in ur mailbox.no the spark is there.first thing i checked on the tester.tore the carb apart again.fuel is pumping,checked fuel pump also.just shuts off 2 seconds after it starts

at marineengine.com...your carb diagram...did you remove and clean #19..the orfice plug?...with the carb on the engine and the fuel bulb pumped up...how much fuel comes out of the bowl when you remove the drain plug on the fuel bowl?...from gently seated, how many turns out is the low speed mixture needle?

yes i tore it all down cleaned with carb cleaner and air pressure.id say maybe 1/2 cup of fuel or more.it is turned out abt 1 little past it.when it was running this is where is seemed good.any more wanted to die and a little less same thing.

try to get it running by using some fuel mix in a spray bottle..if you can and it will continue to run as long as you spray...something may have stopped up the main jet or possibly unmetered air is entering the the equation and the mix is too lean

ok ill check tht,jst weird cause as soon as it starts it dies immediatly.cdi said it sounded like a stator..whats your input on that.its the only thing not new.lol

i fixed carb float .started up and ran perfect,put in gear and it ran for about 2 min and died.

try replacing the hose from the f/p to the carb with a piece of clear vinyl tubing or clear fuel line, the line should remain filled with fuel mix with no air bubbles entering..any air getting in is a problem and its source should be checked and corrected....if you are running the motor with the lower unit in a barrel...I've rigged up an IV like set up for the fuel connected to the carb and had the fuel line from the pump to the carb pumping into an old gas can...at idle you should see good stong pulses from the fuel pump, no tapering off, stoppage or dribbles

altn it was running out of fuel.right before it died i felt bulb it was soft.pumped it and it started.so i took line off motor.pumped it.it was ok.then took fuel filter pump off ,tested it it was ok.but i tore it apart n made sure everythin was clean.cut some of fuel line off where clamps were and now it runs great and fuel bulb stays hard. i thank u for the help with this motor and everyone elses input
