but once i back it in the lake, it takes a few trys to start. even then it dosnt want to. 87 merc 3.0 with aplha one. i do the same proceedure in or out of the water. a few pumps of the throttle, then push the key in for choke and turn it over. why would being in the water make it that much more difficult? also i ran the motor for about 3 seconds w/o having the outdrive submerged but i think im ok as when i lowered the drive all the way some water still came out, so i dont think it was too dry to damage the brand new impeller and housing...what do you think about both of those "problems"? thanks

When the key can push in, you can usually feel it and hear the choke on the engine. I thought I had that push in option on my 2005 3.0L, but today I noticed it doesn't push in. Wondering how the heck you choke this engine.

Both engines:) I've read that the 3.0L has some sort of automatic choke. Are you able to engage yours manually by pushing the key in? I tried to push my key in today and it didn't go, but I never have problems starting so maybe it IS an automatic choke?
