Though it was the solenoid so I replaced it. Doing same thing. Was starting from switch, now it won"t. I can start it from jumping the solenoid. Starter seems to work well when jumped.

Yr and model... HP?

Unplug the big red plug near the starter ( main harness), inspect for corrosian
spray w/ elec cleaner.
Put a meter to the ignition switch, most likely.
See if you're getting v at the switch.

When you "jump the solenoid", are you actually jumping over the solenoid (from the big terminal on one side to the big terminal on the other side)?

If so you're by-passing the whole start circuit confirming only that the battery and starter motor are ok.

Or, are you actuating the solenoid by connecting the battery (large solenoid post on the battery side) to the solenoid input post (small post, yellow wire/red tracer)?

If so, solenoid is ruled out as well, and your problem is keyswitch, neutral safety switch, main fuse, or wiring fault.
