Stat and no stat motor

I noticed that my 66 Johnson 20hp has a small hole in the copper tube that comes out of the pump. Is this to bleed pressure until the stat opens? My 58 non stat 18hp Evinrude dosen't have one.

It allows air to escape that gets in the pump. If it were not there, the impeller would burn up.

Are you sure there's no thermostat on your '58? From memory I thought mine had one... Although the memory is pretty old...

my 35 johnny does not have a stat either. i think there were 2 models one with, one without.

No stat on the 58. Is there a bypass circuit on a stat engine until the stat opens? It seems to take a few seconds to pump water on my 66 20hp even with a new impeller, where as the 58 pumps water right now.
