Static Flush port on Merc 150

I have a 2002 Merc 150 with a static flush port to connect a garden hose. I have always used this flush port without running the motor. A friend of mine says it is ok to run the motor while connected to this. I do see water coming out the pee hole, and lower portion of the motor when I flush the motor. I though I read somewhere that the motor could not be run while using this flush port? When ever I so start the motor I use flush muffs. My question is can you run the motor off the static flush port or will it eat up the water pump impeller?

Check your owners manual, they should tell you.

Being new at this I am still conflicted as to which is better, the flushing from the top or using the muffs and running the engine. I am primarily a saltwater user and therefore anxious to keep the engine as cleaned as possible.

I would do both if you that worried. I would not run the engine though with a hose connected to the flushing point as I reckon you will do in your impeller. It is designed to suck in water from the intakes at the bottom of the leg not from a flushing point just below the powerhead but I may be wrong. I still favour running the motor up with the leg in a drum of water. I have been told to add a drop of "cutting" oil to the water as it will line the water ways in the engine.

I think Andy means soluable oil. The type used in milling machines and lathes for cooling a part while cutting. I would add it to the cooling water,it turns the water white. It does leave a coating on metal. I used to put a bit in my radiator when I lived in California. Kept the engine block from rusting on the inside

I guess the 1st thing I would do is read the owners manual and adhere to what it says, should tell you if you can run the engine. I am not that familiar with that new of an engine.<br />My Honda has the same thing, but I never use it, as it is more convient to do the muff thing and less of a hassle.

Muffs do not fit my motor because of the horizontal plates just above and below my inlets so I have to test mine in the driveway using a hose inserted into the flush hole. I tape up the inlets when I do this so that the water doesn't just run out of them.<br /><br />I still get water out of the pee hole and the center of the prop.<br /><br />I don't think I'm damaging anything because I have done it so much that I probably would have locked something up by now if I was.<br /><br />My flush hole is right behind my inlet ports.

I was at the local mercury dealership today,(Olympic Boats) and asked the guy at the parts counter about the flushing devices and his reply was simply I don't really know, I have never had anyone ask before? There were not any mechanics around to ask.<br />He said he thought the device was made to flush the motor when you cannot remove it from the water.
