Static Timing?

Perhaps a stupid question, but could someone please explain to me; what is static timing?

Static timing is when you set the timing without running the engine. You set the points opening (if it is a points ignition system) to a fixed mark at flywheel or timingplate. If it is a trigger signal ignition system (most of the self-generating CDI system) to a fixed mark at timingplate or flywheel.

BUT the best way is to set the timing dynamic with a timinglamp to a fixed mark at flywheel at WOT. This method gives the correct setting and is does not matter what kind of ignition system the engine has.

Ok thanks! For using a timing light, I believe that I my motor needs to be set to 28 degrees and there are several marks on the fly wheel. Would I need a timing light that is adjustable? Thanks again!

he says to turn over the motor at WOT and use a timing light and set it to 28 degrees, for this I would need a timing light that can be set to the degree I'm looking for?

Please what engine are we talking about? Hp, ignition system and if possible year.

You can use a timing light without adjustable degree.

The flywheel normaly has 2,3 or 4 marks (depending on ignition system) 0 dgr, 28 dgr, 30 dgr 32 dgr and 36.

It's a Force 1989 - 125HP - Model: 1254X9B, I believe it has 3 marks on it. Sorry, the boat is about 100km away right now. I'll be going up there this weekend to work on it.

If it is a 125Hp 1989 it should have four marks on the flywheel.
The one that is alone (to the right counting in front of the engine) is 0 dgr then cw 28 dgr, 30 dgr and 32 dgr and it is refence to the pointer plate mark.

Yes, I think you are correct. So I can do the timing at cranking speed with a regular timing light that is not adjustable? I just aim the light and it will light up the correct mark?

Yes, if you set the throttle at WOT, put the timing light at #1 sparkplug and crank it with the starter is should light up at 28 dgr (number one mark to the left of 0 dgr mark).
28 dgr at cranking speed will give you 30 dgr with the engine running IF THE TIMING IS SET RIGHT.
