Trying to check the stator on my 79' inline 6. Pulled the wires and checked the ohms, came to be about .5 between the yellow and yellow/red wire. I was considering getting a new one anyhow. Anyone know of a good place? Maybe boat fix for $130? Also does anyone know the part number without removing the stator first 174-5456 or 174-5456-16? Thanks!

Re: stator 79 inline 6

Just wondering about the stator, i know it charges the battery just as an alternator would. However, does it also control spark and how well the motor runs. I visually checked spark on my plugs and they all seem to spark pretty well. I am having problems not fouling plugs. I recently rebuilt the carbs and float bowl covers but i cannot get my plugs to stop fouling out. They are black when removed, rich, I have tried every possible mixture setting for idle, maybe i need to adjust float levels inward or maybe another rebuild, but i cannot see why i need a rebuild if i am getting to much fuel, the floats aren't sticking therefore fuel is not leaking from the carbs after running the motor???? So i am pretty sure its not a fuel leak, maybe week spark, but it seemed fine when i tested it. Also the compression is 105 across all cylinders when cold. So i figure they are okay when warm with such close compression. Thanks, Dassault

that stator carges the batt only. all ignition comes from the battery.

Thanks guys, I was certain i read somewhere it had to do with spark, but thanks for clearing that up, very much appreciated! Back to tuning!

It does have to do with spark, but not the yellow wires. They are your charging wires for your battery. Also from your stator are you high speed coils, These are red and red/white. The low speed coils are blue and blue/white. They connect to the switch box. You said you had strong spark on all cylinders, right? Do you have a 90hp?

it's a 115 and has only two yellow wires running down from the stator leading to the block, then traveling from that point to the swithbox.

What are the other color wires going to the switchbox?

Re: stator 79 inline 6

Dassault, The stator for a distributor motor is quite different than the stator for the distributorless motor. On the distributor motor, the stator (and rectifier) only charges the battery. On the Distributorless ignition, the stator charges the battery and controls the spark timing via a trigger circuit.

Re: stator 79 inline 6

THANKS Chris!!
Thanks for clearing that confusion:) My wires are finished so I am going to remove the stator, or at least the fly wheel to get close to the ends, and replace the corroded wires. At least I now know that the stator is definately not the problem concerning the plug fouling.

Re: stator 79 inline 6

Dassault, It sounds like your motor has a distributor. Here is a post which may save your stator.d:)

From Clams Casino To repair rotted out Stators

I've fixed 100 of those, here's what you do:

(You're instincts were right but you just got squeemish - LOL.)

Get two new wires of the same length and guage. Cut off the old wires leaving 1/2 to 3/4 inch of bare nubs sticking up.

Here comes the fun part.

CLEAN the nubs using a light sandpaper stroking the wires straight out form the stator, be gentle and try to breal as FEW strands as possible. Let the strands fan out so yo ucan get most of the green stuff.

When most of the wire is clean, "re-twiddle" them back to 2 separate wires. Make SURE they are separate, angle them both away from center a bit.

Now bare 1/2" of your new wire and use two single strands of new wire to TIE the new one to the "outboard" side of the old one. Then solder generously. Repeat for other wire.

Let it cool and drop on 2 inches of shring sleeve right all the way to the plastic, then add the ring connector to the other end.

When both are done, verify they are totally separate and wrap a piece of electrical tape arounf the plactic to make a "form" and fill that with potting compound or even black silicone seal.

Let harden and remount stator.

Now mind you this is not for the newbie solderer to attempt. I hold an Extra class ham radio liscence (WA1MKH) and am *no* stranger to a slobbering iron hehe....

Re: stator 79 inline 6

Sorry about the confusion, Dassault. Some don't have a distributor. That is why a serial number is helpful.

Re: stator 79 inline 6

merc switched to ADI motors from distributor motors in 1980. 79 was the last year of dist motors and 2 wire stators.

Re: stator 79 inline 6

The CDI/Rapair Troubleshooting Guide lists 115 6cyl. 1979 -1989 Serial numbers 5314656 - OC09999 as ADI. That's what I went by.
