1987 classic 50 red stator with adapter what does the adapter do and how do you check it

Well, not a Merc guy, and not even a pro at all but...

Quick search found that it seems the red adapter was for stators that had 1 coil vs 2 coils and it would allow it to be connected to power packs or similar..
Of course I only say that based on what I read.. I personally have ZERO Idea what it does... LOL
