hi guys i have a 1989 115 hp 4 cylinder outboard my tach wasnt working . had a mechanic check it out and was told that the stator isnt charging he said that the recitifer was working but the stator wasnt... does a stator not charging cause the tach to not work? however the motor starts and runs fine thanks

The stator signals the tach . However the stator can work fine and still power the motor without the rectifier working. If the rectifier doesnt work the tach will not work. IMHO your "mechanic" may be full of crap. My money is on the rectifier being bad and the stator being OK.

With the engine running, disconnect the battery for a few seconds. If it keeps running, the stator is OK.

Re: stator,charging,tach issues

well i got boat home started it and now the tach works , so it looks as though i have an intermittent problem , checked wires coming down from stator to rectifier and at one point only had power in one of the wires according to my volt meter should there be power to both wires at all times, and i also put another rectifier on it that i had on another motor that was new however the tach worked before i put on the other rectifier .. . . . . what on these motors actually regulate the charging of the battery as it has no regulator

Never disconnect the stator with the engine running, 1st it does not prove anything as the engine does not depend on batt voltage to run just the starter motor, 2 it can spike the system and damage it, 3 if you want to check the charging side of the stator just disconnect them from the rectifier and test wire to wire if there is continuity the stator is good. The rectifier is also a simple test with a OHM meter.

Also, sometimes the rectifier can be bad, (the battery is not being charged), but the motor is running good and tach working good, then only the rectifier is replaced, and battery now charges, motor still runs good, and tach still works. So, bad rectifier does not always cause a tach to not work. As stated above, not to difficult to check.

Re: stator,charging,tach issues

I have a 1979 evinrude 100 hp. the tach will work when the engine is cold and then stops when it is warm. the rectifier is new and a regulator is also attached a nd is working. the yellow and yellow gray wires of the stator give a ohm test of 7.6 ohm. is this considered continuity. I am looking for some direction as to whether this is a stator problem or a power pack problem. also can the boat be run safely if the stator is the problem. I would need to pull the boat out of the water to fix or repleace the stator. thanks for any suggestions and help. Bob
