Wile waiting for my carb kits for my 1500 to arrive I have started to mess with my 1150 again. It needs the stator replaced and I thought that would be easy enough. My question is are they all the same for inline 6's from the late 60's to the mid 70's? While checking for one I have noticed that none look like mine even though they all say they came off of inline 6 motors. Should I be looking for my year, 1972, or a specific part number and output.

Are you looking to replace the stator with a used one? There are several sites that will give you the current stator replacement for you particular engine that would the safest route in MHOP.

I just replace my stator on a 1985 Mariner 75 four cylinder. It didn't look like the one that came off but it works just fine.

Whichever I can get a good deal on. I have been looking at the auction sights for used and checking marine sights for new. Thanks.

Used and auction sites when dealing with electrical parts is a crap shoot. I tend to go with the tried and true with at least a warranty that when it was shipped it was in working condition.

I just purchased a stator from a on line company that was shipped and arrived in good working condition for less than $150. If you PM me I can give you some info as to where to go.

Re: Stator for Inline 6 motors

All your stator does is supply power to the charging system. Some of the posters are referring to stators which are used with ADI system, which yours is not.

Any 99 C.I. Inline Six with a distributor will have a stator that fits your Merc. For that matter, a stator from any 66 C.I. "800", "850", 80hp or 85hp Four with a distributor will work. There may be a length difference in the leads of a 4-cyl stator but you could always splice them.

I'd say it's much less risky to find a good used 2-wire stator than the later ADI stators. Not much goes wrong with the older stators except for wire deterioration. As long as the stator passes a basic resistance check and the wires/insulation are in good shape, it should work fine.

On the other hand, I'd never buy a used ADI OE Merc stator, most likely either the high-speed or low-speed windings will be burnt out. A new CDI replacement stator is the only way to go for that ignition system.

Re: Stator for Inline 6 motors

I did notice my part number is the same for a lot of years and sizes of motors. Mostly I was wondering about the fully insulated copper windings, like mine which are completely incased in red plastic, versus the aftermarket and used ones I have found with the windings exposed. Is this a matter of allowing the heat to radiate better or is it a cost cutting method. Mine is probably still good but the wires were broke at the stator base. Thanks for the input.
