i have a 1978 evinrude 140. the number 4 cylinder is not firing. i did a spark test and it will spark one time as soon as i hit the key but then the it goes dead. i swapped the wires, coil and powerpack and to no avail the number 4 cylinder still dosent fire. i took an ohms reading on the stator and got 300 and on the timer base got 32. i dont have a dva meter but i have a digital meter. of course its hard to read but the stator looked like it was jumping to somewhere around 300 volts while the timing base was putting out around .01 volts .02 volts max. anyone have any thoughts as to weather its one or the other?

also i should mention that the engine will only go to about 3500 rpms in drive but 4000 in neutral, but will not stay running below 1200 rpms

The stator supplies 300V to the capacitor in the power pack. The one capacitor in the power pack fires all four cylinders in the correct order as determined by the timer. Common sense says the stator cannot be the cause of just one cylinder not firing.

EDIT: That is a pretty tough engine, but revving it up to 4k in neutral may find you picking up the pieces. After they bring you back from the hospital from shrapnel wounds.

thanks guys. this board has been a really big help. i have the manual but everything is with a dva so i just wanted a second opinion before i spend the 300. also when i rev it to 4000 its just for a split second. i dont leave it that way.

4000 is a very bad idea, even for a "second"!

get the DVA meter I found for you, its the same as paying a tech for 45 minutes labor and once you have one you can test everything with it,

DVA , peak reading...same thing.

at 4K with no load on an outboard you can toss a rod real easy or have a complete runaway, shutting down the throttle won't stop it.!
In test tanks they use test wheels which load the engine to prevent this.
If you don't have a test wheel....?
