engine: old late 70s merc 175 black max v6 number 4301235 or so

problem was engine was running rough so had a compression and spark test done.
mechanic said it was running rough because the stator was bad.
he pulled out 2 wires from under the fly wheel going to the power packs and said there should be some voltage on these wires but there isnt.
he obviously knows more than me, but i thought the stator either worked or it didnt. it couldnt work half way, or only on half of it.

is it possible that the trigger is bad instead?
i could be way wrong, but on my motorcycle when the stator when out my bike ran fine, but drained the battery in no time flat.

by the way the mechanic was very impressed with the engine. he did a compression test and checked everything from top to bottom and said i could drive the boat to cuba once i fixed the stator.
not bad for a almost 25 year old mecury 2 stroke i bought for 400. lets see where those new honda 4 strokes are in 25 years..
dont get me wrong i am a honda fan.. but for the price..? are you kidding me?

Re: stator or trigger?

He's right. The stator on a Merc has 4 spark coils and the others are for charging the battery. The two yellow wires are for the charging circuit the red & blue - red/white & blue/white wires are for the ignition.

Re: stator or trigger?

Those engines have effectively got 2 ignition systems. One for the odd cylinders (starboard bank) and another for the even cylinders (port bank). Each system has a low speed winding and a high speed winding. Losing any one of those windings will cause a problem, but will not necessarily stop the engine. If it's one of the high speed windings is can be a bit tricky to diagnose too.

don't know...I just replaced both on my 04, along w/ regs, and It was a fairly easy install. The biggest problem was getting the flywheel pulled
