What happens when a winding in the stator breaks,
will the engine still run badly, or not at all?

CORY,

Sounds like I may have gone through the same thing. I had one wire, to a coil on the stator, break and burn off. The motor still ran but only on two plugs. The other two fed off of the burnt wire.

Re: ???Stator Problems???

I have a 1998 force 40 that I am about to make a reef out of, I know when my altenator was going out on my truck it had a broken winding, and the lights constantly flickered from dim to bright, well it seems this motor is running the same way, a constant surge up and down but only about 200 rpm, and really can't even get up to speed. Can anyone help me end this nightmare?

It depends on if your coil(s) connect to the stator direct or just to power. My old Merc will run without it off the battery, but others have a winding for each coil(mine has one coil and a distributor). They are easy to check with an ohm meter and you can get a digital one for $10 most places now.
You can also swap coils and see if that plug is still dead(no signal from bad stator). Can also check for AC voltage coming out of there while running. Manual also says to check appearance if you can see it, for burned or oil leaking spots, or goo dropping down from it(Merc manual).

Many multiple coil motors have each coil triggered off of the stator, if bad it would be as you say-that coil would have no signal to fire. Distributor motors have a trigger in there for the ignition.
