There's a dozen 9 amp stators, all interchangeable, and about 7 16 amp versions. All 5 shops may be right, especially if you're trying to buy a used one.

Engine might be a 175, or a frankenmerc. Cross the part number from the original stator to the CDI electronics part, then back up into others that can replace it. It's either 9 amp or 16 amp, probably 9 amp.

Re: stator problems

Assume it's a 9 amp. About the only way you can really screw up is putting a 9 or 16 amp stator under a 40 amp flywheel. That gets a little smokey.

9 and 16 look the same, 40 amp is quite a bit heavier and thicker.

What's the rest of the system?
1. Just a rectifier (3 stud terminals)
2. Rectifier and 2 wire regulator
3. Rectifier/regulator (5 or 6 wires)

Re: stator problems

I do know that is has a 3 stud terminal rectifier, not sure about the rest. And I did find a stamp and the number is 24 78, no other numbers. Also the switch box number is P/N 332-5524A1. Also the flywheel has a numbeer on it that is 74787 with 360 of to the right

What is the lamination thickness of the stator? There is a slight difference between 9 amp and 16 amp. BTW, the current limit in any alternator is the amount of iron in the stator.

Post pictures of your flywheel.

How many starter gear teeth in the flywheel?

Is there a voltage regulator on the engine? It would be a small box on top of the block with 2 wires going to the rectifier.

Re: stator problems

bare with me here, but are you refering to the lamination thickness as the total thickness of the metal rings that make up the stator, if so than it is about half an inch. I was told that the next size was 5/8 inch and it is not that. I will count the teeth when I get home, and I will check again where the wires go after and before the rectifier

Re: stator problems

I looked and there are 94 teeth on the flywheel. how do i post a picture, that might give you a better idea of what you are looking for. the only other box that I found is black, and it is 3inches wide 2inches deep and about 1.5 inches tall that has three wire coming out of it that go to the switch box and I think one goes to the rectifier. The wires that are coming out of that box are white, red, and black. Otherwise the two yellow wires that come off the stator go to the rectifier and the other post on the rectifier is marked with a plus sign and it is connected to the battery cable.

Re: stator problems

The tracer colors on the wires are as important as the base color. I'm betting you're talking about the idle stabilizer, and the wires would be red with white tracer and white with black tracer.

Anyway, You have a 9 amp system. Stator part number would be 398-5454 A7.

For sure , CDI 174-5456 will go, and probably the CDI 174-5456-16. The only question is whether it has the old flywheel on it that might not clear a 5/8" stack.

You could probably get away with putting on an398-5454-A32 or equivalent 16 amp, 1/2 inch stator.

You probably have flywheel 257-7555A3 or 257-7555A8 (1/2" stack) on it. With flywheel 257-7555A9 you could put any 9 or 16 amp stator under it, either 1/2" or 5/8".

Heck, if it were mine, I'd try any 9 or 16 amp stator that was cheap, and if it didn't quite fit, go find a used 16 amp flywheel from a later engine. (would be the A9). Then you're home free for anything in the future.

hope it helps
John

Re: stator problems

thanks j_martin, I have been going back and forth about which stator to get. I have looked at many sites and the stator that pops up the most is the 5454a7 there are a couple of people that are selling one on ebay, so i will try my luck and get on. thanks again, jeremy78

Re: stator problems

I found all the stators that you have mentioned. My question is would i mess any thing up if i bought the 3985454-a32 16 amp, 1/2 inch stator if i should have a 9 amp. Would anything get messed up. also the other question I have is, my stator is sournded by a plastic cover and a replacement is not. Should that effect anything. Last question, I marked the placement of the stator that i took of, but the new replacements look a little different, so is it important to put the new stator in the same placement as the old stator. Once again i thank you for all feedback, since I am unable to take the boat to a close shop

Re: stator problems

I bought the 398-5454a7. I found one that looked just like mine, it was incased totally in plastic. The stator works just fine on my motor. Thanks again for your help
