1978 55hp Johnson 55EL78S
I went by the book and tested the stator it reads a little low on ohms. Checked around an found nobody has one. Already replaced rectifier (today). Is there anyway to repair a stator? Tune it up LOL. Tach works but just very low voltage. Battery slowly dieing. Would anybody have a part number for that stator or did it only fit that year and model?
I could realy use some help here.

Any and all help greatly appreciated!
Thanks Smitty

Re: Stator question?

Did you check stator leads for a ground in the higher ohm scale range? Best to certify whether stator is puting out by determining the a/c voltage for charging system output as per manual.

Re: Stator question?

A stator has very low resistance and many times the accuracy of a meter at low settings is suspect. Are you using a quality digital meter for checking resistance and did you check for shorts to ground. A stator is not a common failing part on motors like yours unless they have been subject to overheated motors, or have cracks, discoloration, or melted insulaton.

For an alternate source than the factory, go to:

http://rapair.com/media/pdf/lrcatalog.pdf

Re: Stator question?

I haven't pulled the stator yet, hoping not to. The Seloc book says to test the stator on the Rx1000 scale. That is great for an old Analog meter, but like most I have a Digital meter that has a scale of 200, 2k, 20k, 200k, 2M and 20M. Do any of these equal the Rx1000? If so which setting would be best to use?

To install an Amp. meter would I use the wire that goes from the terminal block to the batery cable on the starter solenoid? ====--O--=== Installing the meter inline?

Seahorse thanks for the Link they have the stator.

Thanks guys for all the great help and feed back!!

Smitty

Re: Stator question?

I spent many hours at Hornes going though their stuff it is a nice place for parts. As for the battery it is new and holds a charge, once it's charged. I just want to keep it that way without having to lug out a battery charger after every trip. Has anybody had any luck with the little solar charger add-on? Suppose to be able to leave it on 24/7 to keep the battery charged.

Thanks Smitty
