hi,

after waiting for 2 month (yes, yes almost all the boating season here in montreal) for my boat , marina finaly told me the stator need to be changed. well they want to charge me 4 hours to find that... and there no work done, i find this abusive. well... as it should take max 1hr-1hr30 with a tester to know if any electronic component is defect.

now i dont trust them and im gonna give a try at changing the part, should not be that hard. how long should i plan to do that, do i need a puller to remove the flywheel?

Now is there a brand i should avoid? i find the stator made by sierra, CDI and mercury. sierry and cdi are around the same price but mercury one is much more expensive. does it worth the prenium ( 150$ for 2 first , 450 for mercury)

Re: Stator replacement any better brand?

Hi,
I just had the stator changed out in my 150hp Merc black max. I only paid $180 and the brand is quick silver. My mechanic was able to diagnose a bad stator in 15 minutes and less than 1 hour to change out.
Sounds like you are getting ripped off out there.
Good luck, but if you go online and look at some parts stores, I'm sure you can find one cheaper than what you were quoted.

CDI/RAPAIR electronics are by far the best, with the best warrenty in 20 year of use we have never had a failure

well ,

i might give a try to cdi they even are the cheapest in my case. anyone know the tread for puller of the flywheel?

the marina mens was seem to say that only merc stator will do a good job...

does a CDI stator fit a mercury trigger or is it better to match these two part with the same brand?

If you have a bad stator there is no reason to change the trigger CDI replacements are OEM interchangeable. As far as a puller threads I don't know

Re: Stator replacement any better brand?

Im from the Montreal region and had my stator replaced about 3 weeks ago at thibault marine in st-agathe on my 150 merc xr2 it cost me $400 + labour it tokk them 2 days to get the part. I did get a call after they installed the stator to tell me the switch box was also bad. It ran ok but now im getting times were i feel the boat is only running on 3 clylinders just like it did before however it doesnt as happen as often.
Are mercs really that weak when it comes to stator's and switch boxes ?

I bought that flywheel puller a few months ago and it is good quality and works just fine.He sells a lot of them it appears.Don't go nuts with the bidding as there will be some "buy it now" prices of less then twenty dollars if you are patient.I bought mine for $16.99 "buy it now".
I was not sure about posting an ebay link here.Ron G
