Stator?

What are the early signs of a stator going bad? Could you be producing good spark and then have the engine totally die for lack of spark? MY 25 HP Rude starts fine numerous times then... no spark at all! Would this be more likely a stator problem or a power pack issue? I have no melting under the flywheel. Engine works most of the time. then, out of nowhere... NO SPARK. Then the next day, it will start!!!!!

Re: Stator?

It's possible that the stator may be at fault BUT first check all connectors, all connections at and within the rubber plugs. It could be that a socket or pin has been pushed back slightly and is not making a proper connection. Also there may be a frayed wire at one of the sockets/pins.

Check the kill switch if one exists by disconnecting the ground wire portion of it. Also if a ignition switch exists, test that by disconnecting the black/yellow wire from it.

It would have helped if you either inserted the model number or, if known, the year of that engine.

Re: Stator?

Thanks. The power head is a 1979. 25 HP electric start. I have cut the kill wire at the ignition switch, No help. I have cleaned all the connectors, but perhaps I should make sure none of the prongs are recessed. I welcome any other suggestions. Thanks for the help.

Sounds to me like a spark test is in order. You may have a coil just barely holding its own, badly grounded, or a faulty plug wire. Spark check should tell you if you're in the zone or not.
