Stays in gear when put in neutral

I have a mercruiser 1988 3.0L with an AlphaI outdrive. When I put in gear, either forward of reverse, and then back into neutral the prop continues to propel me in the last direction it was spinning.<br />Is this normal, or is there a way to remedy the problem?

Sounds like your gear cable needs adjustment. Slack will cause this behaviour which is not normal. You gear is supposed to engage forward, neutral or reverse exactly as you move the lever.<br /><br />Should engage the gear before the throttle and release the trhottle befoe disengaging the gear - both directions.<br /><br />If this cannot be fixed by adjusting, your cable may need replacement.<br /><br />First of all, look for slack and wear in all connections and linkage.
