1977 Starcraft Chieftan ... I have the motor and stearn drive out of the boat.
How do I know what the gear ratio of the stearn drive is? Several units will bolt up, but I know enough to check the ratio before buying any replacement.

You need a 1.65:1 ratio for that engine.

Re: stearn drive gear ratio???

regarding the gear ratio question on the stern drive of my 77 Starcraft Chieftan
the engine is the inline 6 GM....I'm pretty sure that would have been an Alpha Stern....right? Don S says the ratio should be 1:65:1....a listing of ratios and the stamp on the stern shaft indicates it should be 1:98:1.
Which is correct is of course one question, but what does it mean in the long run....which gives more power?
