New to boating. Purchased boat last summer. Steering seems a little hard to me. Is this normal? How do I know if I am having a problem or not?

Do you mean it's physicly hard to steer? Or is it not going where you steer as it should?
If it's too hard to turn the wheel,it needs grease and lube.
Most marinas sell a "Helm Lube kit" that screws on the top of the helm (the steering box),and allows you to inject the lube into it.Make sure you put a plastic drop cloth under it,so it does not gerk your carpet,if so equipped, because it totals carpet.
On the front of the outboard, there are grease fittings. Use the same grease as you use on your trailer's bearings. It may require someone to steer while you pump the gun,to get it to "take" grease.
Lastly, put the helm hard over,to expose the entire steering rod. Clean it with WD-40 and a rag.Once it's clean, put a little grease on a rag,and coat it liberally.Do this after you use the boat, especially if you do saltwater. Keep that steering rod clean and greased, your pivots greased, and you should have no more problems.

------------------
Time to change my tagline

Hi CSY, I had a similar problem where I found it hard to turn the wheel one way with some throttle on. Maxum engineers suggested raising the outboard to the maximum height on the transom brackets because the skeg was too deep. This did cure the problem a considerable amount but I still find it quite heavy. I also adjusted the trim tab this too made a difference.
I hope this is of some use to you. good luck!

CSY; Step one for Bayliner steering stiffness is toooo undo the steering friction knob located near the dash! Now the effect of adding grease maybe more noticeable.

------------------
