steering aedjustment?

1978 55 Johnson<br /><br />Ok, I have replaced the steering gear (helm) and the cable from the gear to the motor. But I still have a large amount of play, about a half turn of the wheel before the motor starts to turn. It appears to be in the motor part of the setup. Is there any type of adjustment or part I should replace? Or is this normal? Seloc book does not show anything on this, so I ask the experts. <br /><br />Smitty

Hi Smitty,<br /><br />Did you tighten the aluminum nut on the cable(motor end) to the tilt tube?If the outer(black)part of the cable is moving,it should'nt be.Did you install a new or used cable?

New cable new gear and everything is tight. I do see a little play in thte bushing by the motor. I'll have to pull it and try to find a new one.<br />Thanks Smitty
