My transom (1978-mercruiser) shield does not have the access plugs to get to the bolt on the steering arm. My manual says you can drill holes and plug them to get access to them. Has anyone done this? Where do I get the parts to do this? My motor is out and I still cannot get anything on the bolt to tighten it so I believe this is my only alternative. Maybe just pull the whole transon shield? Is this hard?

There is a kit available through any Merc dealer. You have to drill (hole saw) two large holes and thread them with a pipe tap. Those are probably not two tools you have in your toolbox and the tap won't be cheap. As long as your motor is out and drive is off (I assume), I'd unbolt the transom assembly. Be careful of the trim hoses, they're probably getting brittle. You'll probably want a new transom seal.

thanks for reply, I was thinking that may be alot cheaper than buying the saw kit. After unbolting the transom, should it come off pretty easily or will it be a turd?
