Hello I have a 16ft v-bottom lowe and I am mounting a vintage 1967 33hp evinrude ski-twin on it. It has a rack and pinion teleflex steering on the boat and I need to know where in the world I can buy part number SA27198P. It is the 2 plates that mount on the carring handle to attach the steering to. I have got everything I need except this little steering plate help.
Thx.

Welcome to Iboats!

I couldn't find one on iboats' megamall, but this place claims they have 5:

Pretty pricey for a couple bent peices of plate and a bolt. If you have a nearby outboard wrecker, you might want to nose around there.

EDIT: Better price, click here.

EDIT 2: Finally found one on Iboats (Morse, but much cheaper), but its been discontinued.

Hybrid, I would check a discount marine store for some boat trailer parts that you can adapt. After all it looks like a piece of glavanized angle iron, a backing plate and a bolt and locknut.

Sounds like good advice. I have been thinking the same thing. Don't look like 35 dollars worth of stuff to me. thx.

Just don't forget we're talking about steering here if you're talking about doing some backyard engineering. If the thing lets go at WOT, you'll likely get dumped out of your boat. I'm not saying 'don't do it', but don't build something you can't be confident in.

It looks like teleflex used a nyloc nut on their 'package'. Even still, I would back that up with another nut if I were you. Also, I'm a stainless fanatic, but then again I'm boating in salt.

Re: Steering attachment for 1967 33hp evinrude

Been thinking about how much of a chance I would be taking if I try to build the piece myself and for the all the time and effort I have put into making this little fishing boat like I want it. The pieces have notches that look like they keep the linkage in line and secure it to the motor. I don't want to mess up the system. If I can't find one used I will buy one new and feel much more confident in its operation thx.

I've never made one, but I've always pictured making the front peice a 'C' shape to fit over the 'handle' rather than to rely on little indents. I'm just thinking out loud here.

Actually, the piece that attached the motor to the old cable steering (on my '58 Evinrude) was a u-shaped piece of aluminum about 2 inches wide with a spring loaded plunger bar than went through the front of the "U", through the hole in the handle. It was secured by thurning it 1/4 turn and it would seat in the recess on the back of the handle.

That makes more sense to me. My carring handle has raised tangs on the back like it would work perfect with that kind on connection. Where did you find it and how can I get one?

HH, That device was for the old cable/pulley steering. It was made to be a non-tool-needed quick connect.

The standard motor connection to the Teleflex-type uses a "Link arm" to bolt through the steering arm of the motor. Could you use one of those link arms with a longer bolt and three nylon lock nuts? It would seem that if you put a bolt through the link arm and snugged up a lock nut, and then put another locknut on the bolt, then a washer. You could then put the bolt through the steering arm of your 'rude, add another washer and then a locknut. It would stand-off a bit from the handle and hopefully have enough swivel to operate properly.
