Steering backward

I just replaced the rack and pinion steering cable on my boat. Now it steers opposite of what it should. What did I do wrong? I don't know the correct names for all the parts. I replaced the cable with the rectangle on the end. I'm assuming that is the rack. They also sent a new hub the steering wheel goes on. Is that the pinion? I did not replace it.

Re: Steering backward

Depending on the rack you have it may be as simple as switching side with the cable at the rack.

Re: Steering backward

Would it help if you take off the cable, and mount the steering assembly upside down, then replace the cable? Either that, or you have the wrong setup for your side of the boat. Right side mounted steering, or Left hand mounted steering?

Re: Steering backward

Sounds like the rack is mounted on the incorrect side of the pinion. I believe on a right-side drive, the rack is mounted above the pinion.

Re: Steering backward

Good call Chris1958, As I thought about last night, I realized that when the rack is on the bottom and I turn the wheel clockwise it pulls the cable and when it is on the top, it pushes the cable. So I guess I will swap the sides. Ugh, my boat is small & tight and I have to nearly stand on my head to see under the helm. At my age that is not fun but getting the steering correct will be. I know I looked pretty foolish trying to load my boat on the trailer with it backward.

I've been there done that. Makes for an eventful day at the ramp!

Isn't that what I said as well?
