steering bolt striped on a outdrive

I have a volvo 270 outdrive. The bolt that goes through the steering helmet into the outdrive will not hold. The threds in the outdrive are the ones that are gone. I have tried a helix (I think that is what it is called) coil and have gone as far as to pound a brass fitting into the hole and tap it out for the bolt. It just pulls back out. What can I do short of paying for a upper gear housing because of a striped bolt. Thanks Mark

Isn't it aluminum? You can get it welded and re-tap.<br /><br />Bob
