I have a 1970 115 evinrude that came with weird steering brackets that mount to the motor. They are C style clamps(2 of them) that have teeth to hold to the steering tube and attach to the motor with a single bolt. The teeth setup is really ineffective as it holds for only a temp. time then the tube wiggles free. Has anybody modified a better bracket system for this? I saw on the parts section they make clamps for inboard motors that attach with a single bolt. Seems like that would work for mine.? I'll have a picture posted later in the day.

That engine did not have the tilt tube steering. That came out as I recall in 1973, and is still used. There were different steering systems available for your style engine, but I don't know what is now available. I had a 1972,125, what I did was to find the entire mounting , swivel assembly from a junked, later model V-4. This was a 1975, 115, and bolted right on. This gave me the tilt-tube steering, plus was was able to add tilt & trim.

i have tilt/trim added on. I'll post a picture hopefully tomorrow. I think I have an idea, but I'll wait until I add a photo.

ok here is the photo. The clamp can be seen, the grey matter around it is jbweld. There is another clamp on the other side. They are attached to the motor with a bolt. My idea is to cut a piece of metal and attach the metal to the motor, then use that to add a clamp mechanism to. This way I can mount the clamps wherever on the metal strip instead of having to mount them where the old ones are mounted.

I took the clamps off. Anybody have a photo or a source that I can look at on how the steering cable was mounted to the motor?

I can't tell by the photo just what you have there, but JB Weld has no place on a steering sytem. That is a 115 Hp, 250 Lb. engine your trying to hold on to there. Should that steering break, or come loose, and the engine goes to full lock, you, or some one with you, is going to get a drink.

youll have to leave the arm on and attach it to youre cable. youll just have to bolt the cable firmly. it looks factory to me so it will have to be just right
