I am planning on installing a Simrad rotary AP in place of my Teleflex QC Safe-T rotary helm.
Is it necessary to unhook the steering cable from my outboard engine in order to remove or install the cable at the helm?

No. Remove the cotter pin that retains the helm end of the cable. Turn the wheel and the end of the cable will back out until it's free. Install is reverse of removal...
