Steering cable cleanout

I noticed after the winter that the steering was really stiff - not that it was ever that easy. How do you go about re-lubing cables - or taking them apart? I seem to remember that some boat yard advertised disassembly some sort of a ream out then new grease and assembly. Any advise would be appreciated...

I could be wrong but I don't think you can disassemble steering cables. If the stiffness is just do to a little corrosion and lack of lube on the end, removing it from the steering tube and oiling the end with an appropriate lubricant (one that won't damage the plastic sheaths) may help in the short run. My guess is that you will end up replacing the cable.

Quite often it's a problem with corrosion or junk in the motor tube/cable area. Take the cable off the motor and clean/grease the tube in the motor mount.

There is an end piece available that goes between the cable and motor tube that has a grease fitting on it. Not sure it it's intended to grease the cable or the steering tube on the motor.

I have often thought of drilling a small hole in the crimped metal end of the cable and threading in a zerk fitting so it can be greased.
