I'm in the process of getting my steering hooked up on my '59 Crestliner. It had a very crude setup when I bought it, so in the process of my resto I'm trying to improve upon it. Because of how bad it was previously all I have to go off of is the '58 OBC Standards book I have. It's pretty vague in this department.
T
problem I am having (or perceived problem, anyways) is that as I steer either direction from center the spring compresses quite a lot. Is this normal, or do I need to change up my mounting locations? It works relatively smoothly other than that. A

thing I noted is that the cables go slack when the motor is tilted up. Is this also normal, or is this another sign that my geometry is all wonky?

Thanks in advance for the help!

The way I remember it, the springs should not compress when steering. The springs allow some preload and shock absorber action, plus allow the motor to be tilted up.

A lot of cable steering systems only have one spring.

There should be a diagram on the web, for you to follow.

That's kinda what I thought. I have it set up with a single spring on the port side. I've looked at a lot of the diagrams online, but I still can't quite figure out my issue based on those alone.
