I am new to this sight and also boating so please excuse my "rookie like" terminology.

79' yazoo 16 ft. with a 92 evinrude 48 hp SPL

Just before heading out to the lake, i turned my steering wheel in order to get my prop properly aligned (centered). As i did so, i heard a horrible "cracking" sound. I have a rotary system... i examined under my my steering wheel and noticed that the steering cable had busted through its casing and no longer was feeding to the stern end. when turning the wheel that way (right) the cable stretches down in a U - like fashion rather then feeding through the remaining casing. I can turn the wheel to the left and the cable will rewind but the motor wont move even if i try to do so by hand. It seems as if the problem lies on the stern end...
Would i be able to fix this or should i get a new system. It has likely never been replaced. If you need further details/ info on exactly whats going on here.... please let me know. Thanks for any help and great site!

Re: Steering cable help

well it is time to replace the cable, atleast. there should be a # on the outer sheath, that is the replacement #. if you can get a picture of your helm, that makes it easier for us to give directions on disconnecting. on the motor end, remove the nut hold the cable to the tilt tube, starboard side , and disconnect the steering linkage on the port side. the cable is ready to come out, side it out, if it is stuck, it may take driving it out, with a block of wood to protect the rod end drive it out with a hammer. then a drift pin. then clean the tilt tube and grease it. tilt tube brush : you put this in a drill, and clean the tube . http://www.iboats.com/T_R_Marine_St...73703934--**********.297344271--view_id.40162

Re: Steering cable help

Welcome to iboats!

I would say if you actually wore through the sheath you got your moneys worth out of it.

It sounds like as you turn one way it pulls the cable, the otherway it pushes so with out the sheath to contain it it comes out.

As TD said you should be able to order a new cable, be sure you get the right one as they changed the ends that go into the helm.
