Is there any hope of salvaging a very tight steering cable? It seems to be in excellent shape except for excessive force needed to steer. Removed it from boat and cannot push or pull the center by hand. The end has a spiral wrap around the center shaft which fits into the steering wheel housing. There are no obvious kinks.
The motor end shaft can be unscrewed from the center rod but the shaft can't be pulled off the assembly. Thinking of cutting off the lip in an attempt to remove the center working shaft and lubricating.Comments?
Jerry

Re: Steering Cable Lub?

I did salvage an old cable by getting an old plastic milk carton, and cutting it in half..

I put the cable end ito the pour hole of the carton and taped it in place, as liquid tight as possible...

Then I filled it with very light oil, elevated that end of the cable as high as possible and left it sit for a day... (by then oil had started dribbling out the other end.)

It worked, the cable lossened up heaps.. but that cable was just dry, the cable core had no damage that I could tell.

I personally suggest you just get a new cable.. they are cheap and steering is not the place to start experimenting as a failure can cost you dearly..

Incidently, I have since changed the oiled cable for a new one.. just for piece of mind.

rgds

Frank
