steering cable, measuring the boat or the old cable?

I am getting ready to replace my steering cable. I want to get the proper length cable so I check several sites and measure my boat according to their instructions. I come out with a 14' cable. Actually 13+ but rounding off to the nearest foot brings it to 14'. Then while talking to a friend he tells me he has a complete helm, steering wheel and cable I can have.....He will even deliver! It looks like new. I check the fit by laying it on my boat along the old cable. It's just a little over 1' short of hooking up. I measured the plastic (black) portion of this (new) cable and it's 10'. 10'6" to the nuts that fasten on the helm and the tilt tube. What's going on here? Now I really don't want to order a cable using the measuring guide offered on the websites. I don't want to have to find ways to hide 3+ feet of cable. I know the sensible thing to do is get one to match the old one, however it just makes me scratch my head why is this so far off? They are the experts and I usually go with what they say and would have this time until my friend showed up with his freebie!

I just went through this on a throttle cable and came up with 14', looked at the cable and found the stamped 12'. The measure way always works out to extra. In the end it would keep you from ordering/buy too short of a cable.

Measure your old cable, buy the same brand and move on ...
