Hi Guys,

Maybe you can take a look at the type of steering I have an tell me how to get it out of the boat. I am trying to restore my boat an I want to remove my steering cable from the side passage. Here is a picture:

You would think the cable will pull through the gunnel passage starboard side but it will not. I tried taking apart the steering housing but it has a linkage inside it an it seems like its fastened permanant.

Any ideas?

Well....... the cable will come out of the steering box and you can pull the entire cable (housing and all) out from the stern of the boat.

Some of the older steering boxes have bolt's, pins or places to push a pin into to release the cable. Once released the cable will thread out the housing end

Absolutely make sure that you attach a string to it and leave the string in place to help with re-installation through the sides of the boat.

Ok, I was not sure that the cable linkage inside that house would come out. When I got resistance I stopped pulling. This is my first so I did not want to mess it up.

Ill look for a possible release pin you speak of.

Thanks for the tip on the string thing for re-installation.

Conclusion:

Got my cable out. Thanks for the help.

I did not have a pin but I had a "cap" similar to the cap on both ends of the steel bar of a rubber roller guide that is under your trailer. I mean, the same way one removes an old rubber roller off the steel rod, is very similar to how I got my cap off my steering housing. I had to pry it off. After I got it off, I then pushed up on the steering shaft an the linkage would release. Here is a picture of the cap.

As you can see I damaged the cap so now I have to find a replacement.
