Just mounted new/used motor on the boat('85 115 Johnson) and when I when to put the steering cable through the tube all was fine but had a hard time fitting the end nut(the one with the grease fitting ) over the end of the cable. Got it on and got everything tight but the steering is very stiff.
I removed the nut from the tube and the steering cable is free. It seems like the nut wont slide on the end of the cable shaft. All these parts are from my old motor(even the tube from the swivel bracket) so I dont know why these parts didnt bolt back on good?

Did you clean the old tube out? I use a 12 gauge shotgun brush on a cleaning rod and solvent......then I oil the inside of the tube.

Does the motor turn free when the cable is not connected? It could be the motor needs to be lubed up too.

Old tube is clean. Actually with the end nut(one with grease fitting ) diconectted from tub the shaft freely slides. Seems like the nut is binding on the tube. Actually having trouble getting nut off bar section of cable. I think I'll get a new nut with grease fitting. Seemed hard to get back on and I may have nicked it of something and now it wont slide
