I am moving my console farther back on my 16 foot jon boat. Everything went pretty good til I found out there was no way my old steering cable was flexing enough to fit in the boat where Im putting the console out. The thing is old and cracked and probably needs replaced anyway. Ive attached some pictures, I didnt take the old one off because I didnt know what I would be opening up when I unscrewed the nuts on the steering wheel and the little piston thingy on the motor. If I unscrewed the nuts shown in the pictures will the steering cable come right off? Should my local boat shop have steering cables? Do I measure the cable from the nuts, or is it longer than that?

thank you

Re: Steering cable questions

Hard pics to see but there isn't anything in there but the cable. The nut just acts as a cable holder. Look here on iboats and they have cables and the procedure for measuring i think. If the old cable worked good I would think it would be as simple as subtracting the length you went back with the console from the old cable.

If you are moving the console back and your cable works ..... it will be fine if the cable slacks and there may be no need to change it.

The other method is to look at the replacement cables from iboats and just order the new cable.

Re: Steering cable questions

I ordered one through my local boat shop, he knew it wasnt rack and pinion so he ordered it, I hope its right and doesnt kill me, I forgot to ask price

I tied a string to the nut where the cable hooks to the motor and ran it along the cable to where the console will be, and its about ten foot, and I ordered a cable that was ten foot, I might call and bump it up to eleven
