steering cable removal

I'm trying to pull out the steering cable on a 70hp mercury outboard. I've got all the nuts off, and motor unscrewed and slid down the transom to make room to pull out the cable. The cable slides out fairly smoothly to within a few inches of where it ends and then stops abruptly. Is there something on the end of the cable thats impeding it? Or is there something in one of the extra sleeves (they've slid out a ways as well)? This is an older motor ('83) and it has an oil injection fixture in the middle of the cable column, could this be causing a problem somehow? I can't see how to remove it. I tried heating it up to no avail. Any suggestions welcome . Thanks

Re: steering cable removal

Is there an end screwed onto the cable that might be slightly bigger than the tube? I've seen it in the past.
