Steering Cable Removal

I have a 1979 Sea Ray SRV 200. It is powered by a Mercury 188HP/302 ci V8.

My lower unit was hit by a riding lawn mower while the boat was on the trailer. I have discovered the steering is now sticky when turning past "straight" and going to Port. A visual inspection of the steering linkages at the stern, in the engine compartment revealed the rod connected to the end of the steering cable is bent.

Obviously, I need to replace this part. I have removed the steering cable from the steering wheel. I have loosened the retaining sleeve where the cable enters the tube. I have also unbolted the bent piece from the linkage that connects to the lower unit steering arm.

Is there something special to remove the bent piece? The bent piece will enter the tube, but I cannot get the end (where the bolt hole is) to go in. I am betting this part unscrews from the cable? Is the bent piece a part of the cable?

Yes, the bent piece IS part of the cable....
I'd just saw it off to remove it....

Re: Steering Cable Removal

I appreciate the quick reply. I reviewed things more closely and I am not convinced what I have described is part of the cable. I can be wrong but... The part that is bent is a shaft that slides inside of a tube which is bolted to the stern. The tube 3/4" OD and is threaded about half way. It is secured with two 1" nuts that have it anchored to a bracket that is part of the lower unit mounting plate.

I am afraid to cut anything until I know what I am cutting. I think the tube and shaft are not a part of the steering cable replacement kit.

Am I wrong?

The way I'm reading your posts is,
The "tube 3/4" OD ",+ "with two 1" nuts " Are part of the inner transom shield......Yes..
After you've Totally Unscrewed "the retaining sleeve"......Saw Off the Bent part of the Rod that's Bent,+ Pull it Out.....
The silver rod, about 7/16s dia, IS the End of the Steering Cable.....

You'll Also find that a Complete Helm System can be bought for about the Same Money as Just the Cable..... Teleflex is the way to Go....

"Am I wrong? "

Yes...

Re: Steering Cable Removal

I reviewed some printed material from Teleflex and see the part I was concerned about is the end of the steering cable.

I will have it removed tomorrow and order replacement parts by weeks end.

Your advise was right on. Thank you much!
