I have a 1979 Sea Ray SRV 200. It is powered by a Mercury 188HP/302 ci V8.

My lower unit was hit by a riding lawn mower while the boat was on the trailer. I have discovered the steering is now sticky when turning past "straight" and going to Port. A visual inspection of the steering linkages at the stern, in the engine compartment revealed the rod connected to the end of the steering cable is bent.

Obviously, I need to replace this part. I have removed the steering cable from the steering wheel. I have loosened the retaining sleeve where the cable enters the tube. I have also unbolted the bent piece from the linkage that connects to the lower unit steering arm.

Is there something special to remove the bent piece? The bent piece will enter the tube, but I cannot get the end (where the bolt hole is) to go in. I am betting this part unscrews from the cable? Is the bent piece a part of the cable?
