Steering Cable Removal

I have a 1982 Mercury 90 hp inline 6 cyl. outboard. I removed it yesterday from my boat, and as of now I cannot remove the steering cable itself. I have included a picture below for you to look at. The cable itself goes into a cylinder which holds the outboard and the trim bracket together. It seems as though the cable is attached to something inside of this cylinder, and I cannot get to it for removal. Any ideas of how to remove this cable would be great.... check out the pic and if you need anymore, let me know.
